Random Sporting Thought – NFL Hall of Fame

This past weekend two former coaches were inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. This year, they went about it a bit different. Normally, everyone is announced at the same time. This year, in a made for TV moment (literally, they both work for Fox and CBS, respectively), Pro Football Hall of Fame President David Baker made a surprise appearance and let these two fine individuals know in person.

Congratulations to both Jimmy Johnson and Bill Cowher. They are both deserving, and their reactions are worth watching.

Random Sporting Thought – An NCAA alternative

Every now and then I get the urge to say what is on my mind. Thanks for listening. Know these are all my opinions. Feel free to comment below.

I want to start off the series talking about the NCAA.

I’ll admin it, I love sports. I follow whatever sport is in season, mostly North American sports that is. However, there is one aspect of sports that really grinds my gears. The NCAA. The non-profit organization that makes everyone rich except the players.

The system the NCAA built sets up their student-athletes for failure, especially star recruits. They’re offered everything under the sun: money, cars, women, and more. Yet they’re supposed to turn it all down. If they accept, it’s not the adult who offers the bribe that is blamed, it’s the 17 year old kid. So backwards.

I remember listening to the late Frank Deford who was outspoken about NCAA corruption ahead of his time. Now, it’s all the rage to say players should get paid. Yeah, no shit they should! The coaches and athletic directors get paid millions, even the students working at the library get paid minimum wage. However, the stars of the show, the players, get suspended if they trade a signature for a tattoo.

Of course, that depends on how much money the upcoming game is and how important they are to ratings. After all, the NCAA still has a product to sell. So let’s suspend the backups, let the stars play in their bowl game, then suspend them next year to save face. Yep, that happened a few years ago to Ohio State.

It makes me not want to watch any NCAA sports. You know what I would watch? A new league formed independently by the top Universities geared toward benefiting the student athletes. Hasta luego, Goodbye, and Agur NCAA!
